"KHAKI GUESTHOUSE in Horikawa-Nijyo,KYOTO"
We renovated the Kyoto Machiya near Nijo castle in Kyoto.
It is a guesthouse of one house charter.
This traditional town house was built 120 years ago and it was an architecture of dye store.
This site is narrow and slender.
This is a typical shape of site in Kyoto.
There were five areas in parallel in this Kyoto Machiya, so we disassembled the two and made Void.
These Voids connected other space vertically.
We can go through the landings above the sanitary, go through the bridge and go to the guestrooms on the second floor.
In the remaining three areas, we made parts to keep old and parts to be newly created.
There is a big door at the entrance.
The artist painted two abstract paintings at this door.
One picture is a picture with a lattice-like city in Kyoto as a motif and the other one is a picture of Nijo castle pine.
This architecture has a courtyard.
We made the desolated garden into a Japanese garden.
Some stones used in the garden are there.
It is a small garden, but it feels wide and bright.
Each room is separated by sliding doors.
Sliding doors are heavily used in traditional Japanese architecture.
We used that sliding door for development.
Closing the sliding door will result in an independent room, but by opening all the sliding doors the space will become a unit.
From the opening we can see the overlapping of white space, old space and garden.
Traditional Japanese architecture is strong and delicate.
We inherited the form of traditional architecture and create a new architecture.
