夕暮れ時、母は忙しそうに食事の支度をしている。
食卓の上には家族の人数分の食器を並び始めている。間もなく食事の時間。
小学生に上がる前の私は、テーブルの下にもぐりこんでいる。
お気に入りの絵本を読んだり、
ぬいぐるみ達ともう一つの食卓を囲んだり、
おもちゃの鉄道や自動車でミニチュアの都市をつくっている。
食卓の上と下では、1枚の天板を隔てて、まったく異なる時間と空間が広がっている。
それと同質の時間・空間を再現してみようと思う。
「何をしているの？」母がテーブルクロスの裾をつまみあげ、遊びに夢中になっている私の顔を覗き込む。
BankART 1929が主催する「パブリックアートテーブル2023」のためのテーブルをデザイン・製作した。
約4.8mx1.5mの大きなテーブルで、天板の一部がめくりあげることで、
テーブルの下に小さな空間を用意した。テーブル下は、1人で篭る／2人並んで／ゆったりと1人で、
などそれぞれの居方と、めくれ上がりにより緩やかに分割されるテーブルの上の居方を、それぞれ想定しカタチを決定した。
運搬や搬出入に考慮して、テーブルは3分割できるようになっている。
テーブルの脚は、分割したそれぞれのテーブルが自立するのはもちろん、
連結したときに隣り合うテーブルの脚がダブって見えないようにするため、変則的な配置になっている。
「パブリックアートテーブル」は、公共空間にイスとテーブルを置くことで公共空間の意味や質を変化させることを意図している。
そこにさらに「テーブルの下」という少しプライベート寄りで、秘密めいた空間を混ぜ込むことで、
公共空間を変質させ、少し不思議な風景を生み出すことを目指した。
一枚の白いプレートがつくりだす上と下の世界は、公共空間をささやかに異化する。
"The World Under the Tabl"
At dusk, my mother is busy preparing food.
Tableware for the number of people in the family is now lined up on the dining table.
It's almost time for dinner.
Before I started elementary school, I would crawl under the table.
I read my favorite picture books,
sit around the other dining table with their stuffed animals,
and create miniature cities with toy trains and cars.
Above and below the dining table, a single top plate separates them,
and completely different times and spaces unfold.
We decided to try to recreate a time and space with the same quality.
“What are you doing?”
My mother picks up the hem of the tablecloth and looks into my face, engrossed in play.
We designed and produced a table for "Public Art Table 2023" sponsored by BankART 1929, a gallery in Yokohama.
It is a large table measuring approximately 4.8m x 1.5m,
and a portion of the top can be flipped up to create a small space under the table.
The shape of the table was designed by considering different ways of crawling under the table,
such as one person, two people side by side, and one person relaxing.
The table can be divided into three parts for ease of transportation and loading/unloading.
And it's heavy enough to be lifted by several people.
The legs of the table are arranged in an irregular manner so that each divided table can stand on its own,
and when connected, the legs of adjacent tables do not appear to overlap.
This event, “Public Art Table2023” aims to change the meaning and quality of public space by placing chairs and tables in it.
We aimed to create a somewhat mysterious landscape by incorporating a somewhat private and secret space called “under the table."
The upper and lower worlds created by a single white plate subtly transform the public space.
